Classification guide
Mild
Usually not agitated, able to talk in sentences, sits normally, SpO2 above 94%, and PEFR at least 70%.
Moderate
Talks in phrases, prefers sitting to lying down, SpO2 90-94%, reduced air entry, and PEFR at least 50% but below 70%.
Severe
Agitated, talks in words only, sits hunched forward, SpO2 below 90%, accessory muscle use, and PEFR 50% or less.
Life-threatening
Confusion or drowsiness, unable to talk, silent chest, poor respiratory effort, PEFR 33% or less, or bradycardia for age.
